Resilience and a Positive Mindset: My Fight for Justice
Life has a way of testing our strength in ways we often never expect. As a survivor of domestic abuse and financial exploitation, I’ve found myself fighting for not just my basic human rights, but for my home, my safety, and ultimately, my peace of mind. The battle isn’t just legal—it’s deeply personal. Yet through it all, one thing has become clear: resilience and a positive mindset are my most powerful allies.
In this post, I’ll share a bit about my journey and how maintaining resilience and a positive mindset has helped me stand strong against the tide of injustice, and how I am pushing forward despite the obstacles stacked against me.
The Challenges: A Fight on Multiple Fronts
For over 6 years, I have legally owned my home, the place where I’ve created memories and sought refuge. But despite the security of ownership, I was forced to face eviction on 25 February 2025, under unjust circumstances. My ex-husband, who has no legal right to my property, fraudulently manipulated the legal system, hiding assets and using deceitful tactics to gain control over my home. To add insult to injury, I was denied the opportunity to defend myself against these claims, leaving me with no chance to fight for what’s rightfully mine.
But that wasn’t the end. The Council—who should have prioritised my right to housing under the Housing Act 1996, especially as a victim of domestic abuse—refused to provide any support after my eviction. Forced homelessness isn’t just a logistical issue—it’s a violation of my human rights. Financial abuse, emotional trauma, and the very real threat of losing everything I’ve worked for have left me in a vulnerable position.
Despite these overwhelming challenges, I’ve come to realise that my inner strength, grounded in resilience, is what keeps me going.
The Power of Resilience
Resilience is often defined as the ability to bounce back from adversity, to remain strong in the face of challenges, and to continue pushing forward despite setbacks. In my journey, resilience has meant not just surviving, but finding ways to rise up again and again when I’ve been knocked down.
There are days when the weight of everything feels too much to bear. The legal battles, the lack of support, the emotional toll—they all seem to mount up. But resilience isn’t about never feeling overwhelmed. It’s about acknowledging the pain, but refusing to let it define you. It's about looking at the bigger picture, setting new goals, and finding strength in your own story.
Through all the legal paperwork, court proceedings, and bureaucratic delays, my resilience has become my anchor. With each obstacle, I remind myself that this fight is not just about winning in court. It’s about winning my freedom, my safety, and my peace of mind. Resilience has helped me hold onto hope when everything around me seemed uncertain. It’s that unshakable belief that I am worthy of justice and I have the right to a secure life.
The Importance of a Positive Mindset
In tandem with resilience, maintaining a positive mindset has been vital. A positive mindset doesn’t mean ignoring the harsh realities of the situation—it means choosing to focus on solutions, believing in possibilities, and finding the silver linings, even when things look bleak.
Having a positive mindset has helped me navigate the judicial review process, where I am challenging the fraudulent court order that granted my ex-husband control over my property. The Royal Courts of Justice have the power to correct injustices when the process has been unfair, and I trust in the law to bring justice. I know the Council’s refusal to house me is unlawful and that the court will see that my human rights and property rights were violated. This belief in the fairness of the system is what keeps me moving forward, even in the face of adversity.
In the toughest moments, maintaining a positive mindset has helped me:
- Keep my focus on what’s within my control. While I can’t control the actions of others, I can control how I respond and what actions I take next.
- Reframe setbacks as opportunities for growth. Every “no” I hear is one step closer to a “yes.” Every delay in the process is a chance for me to strengthen my case.
- Take care of my mental health. A positive mindset is also about recognizing the importance of self-care, even amidst the chaos. It’s about acknowledging that it’s okay to rest and recharge for the battle ahead.
The Path Forward: A Battle for Justice
I’m still in the middle of this fight. But I know that I am not alone. Resilience and a positive mindset have kept me going, even when it feels like the weight of the world is against me. With every challenge, I choose to move forward. With every setback, I choose to get back up.
As I continue my judicial review to challenge the Council’s refusal to house me and the fraudulent court order, I am reminded that justice is not always swift, but it is always worth fighting for. I may have lost my home temporarily, but I will not lose my fight for justice.
For anyone facing similar battles—whether legal, personal, or emotional—remember: resilience isn’t about avoiding the storm, but about learning how to dance in the rain. A positive mindset doesn’t eliminate the difficulties you face, but it gives you the strength to keep going, no matter how tough it gets.
Justice is within reach. And with resilience and a positive mindset, I will continue to fight for my rights—because I know that in the end, truth and fairness will prevail.
